What this website does with information about you, in plain words.
Last updated 22 October 2026
In short
- The site has no database, no analytics, no ads and no trackers, and it sells nothing. The only thing it keeps on a server is a short-lived record of how each IP address uses it, under a scrambled code instead of the address, to protect it from abuse (below).
- Like every website, it can't reach you without your IP address: its host, Netlify, sees it, and so does Google, which serves the typefaces of most pages (and YouTube's video on the Lore page, if you play it).
- Signing in to the Command Deck, or to an ally's command deck on the Allied Portals page, uses Discord. The site checks your roles, keeps a 7-day sign-in cookie in your browser, and stores nothing on a server.
Who runs this site
mikunniverse.com is a free, non-commercial fan site of the Mikunn'iverse, a community of Elite Dangerous players. It is run by Walt Kerman. For anything about this page or your information, message Walt Kerman on Discord, in The Mikunn'iverse server.
When you open any page
- Hosting. Netlify, a company in the United States, hosts the site. Its servers receive your IP address and what every browser sends with a request (the page asked for, the browser's name), and Netlify keeps access logs that include IP addresses for a limited time, to run and protect its service. Those logs are Netlify's: this site doesn't receive or keep them. Netlify's privacy policy.
- Protection from abuse. So that scripts can't drain the site, it keeps a short-lived record of how each IP address uses it, under a scrambled code, never the address itself, and may refuse or block an address that misuses it. Walt Kerman may be told when an address is blocked, with part of the address and its rough location. If you are blocked by mistake, tell Walt Kerman on Discord.
- Typefaces. Most pages load their typefaces from Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google's servers for them and Google sees your IP address. Google says no cookies are sent with these requests. This page loads nothing from Google. Google's privacy policy.
- Nothing else. No analytics, advertising, tracking or forms. The site itself keeps no logs and has no database: the record above is all it keeps.
If you play a video
The Lore page has a video from YouTube. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. Then the video plays in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com): YouTube, which is Google's, receives your IP address and what your browser sends with a request, and its player may keep data in your browser, as YouTube does. Google's privacy policy.
What your own browser keeps
Some pages remember things in your browser, so they open the way you left them: the radio's volume, the song you were on and the songs you have played (so they never download twice); map layers, sort orders and hints you closed; the missions and settings you make in the Command Deck and the allies' command decks; and, for one tab, whether you came from the subreddit (below). All of it stays on your device and is never sent to the site. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes it.
Arriving from the subreddit
To follow the rules of the r/EliteDangerous subreddit, we had to add the ability to keep track of which site you came from, so that certain content can be blocked:
- Links to this site posted in the subreddit end in ?from=reddit, and so does the front page's Reddit Compliant Version button. Arriving by one, your browser keeps a note of it for that tab (its session storage), and the site's links carry it on to every page you open from there.
- While it is there, what an AI made is blocked on every page: Radio Free Mikunn's music is switched off (the player says BLOCKED, and no song is played or downloaded), and the analysis an AI agent wrote (the Colonization Brochure's agent's pitch and What stands out, and the area studies' Findings) is blurred under BLOCKED.
- The note stays on your device. Like every address, one ending in ?from=reddit reaches the site's host, Netlify; nothing else is kept about it. Closing the tab forgets it.
Signing in to the Command Deck
The Command Deck is for the Mercs of Mikunn, and it opens after a Discord sign-in:
- You approve the sign-in on Discord's own page. The site never sees your Discord password.
- Discord then sends the site your member profile in The Mikunn'iverse server: your account's ID and name, your roles there, and whether you have accepted its rules. (The profile also holds things like your nickname, picture and join date, which the site doesn't use.) The site asks about that one server only.
- Discord's access is handed back as soon as that check is done. Nothing from Discord is stored on a server.
- If you carry the Merc role, your browser gets a sign-in cookie for 7 days. That cookie is the only place your ID and name are kept.
- If the deck turns you away, the sign-in page's address carries your Discord name (and, without the Merc role, your roles' ID numbers) so the page can tell you why. Like every address, it reaches Netlify's access logs.
Signing in to an ally's command deck
The Allied Portals page has command decks made for our allies. The Jolly Co-Operators Command Deck is for the Jolly Co-Operators, and it opens after a Discord sign-in of its own, which works the same way:
- Discord sends the site your member profile in the Jolly Co-Operators' Discord server, as above: your account's ID and name, your roles there, and whether you have accepted its rules. The site asks about that one server only.
- If you carry the illuminati role there, your browser gets a sign-in cookie of its own for that deck, for 7 days: your Discord ID and name. The two sign-ins are separate: signing in to one never signs you in to the other, and each has its own sign-out.
- If the deck turns you away, its sign-in page's address carries your Discord name (and, without the role, your roles' ID numbers in the Jolly Co-Operators' server), as the Command Deck's does.
| Cookie | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
mk_oauth | Protects the sign-in while it runs, so nobody else can finish it. | Up to 10 minutes |
mk_sess | Keeps you signed in: your Discord ID and name, signed so it can't be forged. | 7 days |
mk_jco | Keeps you signed in to the Jolly Co-Operators Command Deck: your Discord ID and name, signed so it can't be forged. | 7 days |
They are needed for the sign-ins to work. The site sets no other cookies. To remove a sign-in, sign out of it here, or clear this site's cookies in your browser; left alone, each ends after 7 days.

Your choices
You can ask what the site holds about you (in short: nothing on a server but the record above, under a scrambled code), ask for anything to be deleted, or ask anything else about this page: message Walt Kerman on Discord. The sign-in cookies you can delete yourself, above.
Changes
If what the site does changes, this page changes with it, and so does its date.
